Fizz (Episode 1)

"Faved"

submission: Fizz (Episode 1)
date: June 30, 2009

Because I liked this submission so much, I felt compelled to write a review not contradictory, but somewhat in disagreement with Insanimation's. While I respect and appreciate his thorough review and the time he took to write it, I think it's imperfect to just give a 0-10 rating to each aspect of any given flash, and use that as a basis of it's quality. It's too textbook, and to do so is to not only imply that each one is as important as the other, but also to imply that there is a perfect score that the submitter can only reach by perfecting each aspect of his submission, which I think is too much. For example, if an artist creates a cartoon to go with a song, what rating does he get for audio, since he didn't create the music? Does this take away from the submission's quality and prevent it from perfection, that one of its aspects is unable to be truly rated? What if an artist's submission is like a Stephen King book, and doesn't start at the begging of its plot, but throws you in the middle? How do you rate its storyline? My point is, according to Insanimation's rating system, no, this flash isn't perfect. But to me, it's a 10/10, 5/5, because I loved the humor. It wasn't knee-slapping hilarious, but not all humor is; it was clever and the timing was great. No there isn't a storyline behind the two characters, but is that needed to appreciate the wit? I guess what I'm saying is: sure you can rate each aspect of a submission separately to get a total of 27, then divide 27 by 40, get .675, round up to 7 and make that your "score" for the flash, but doesn't that feel a little cold? I mean, as Newgrounders we aren't rating cars, or household appliances. Is the quality of a flash submission really determined by the sum of its rated parts divided by the possible total? Or is it maybe determined by the enjoyment of the viewer? For some Newgrounders a dick joke ruins a flash, or makes it childish; for others it's a classic that is always refreshing to see used in original ways. Just consider that Insanimation's way of reviewing flash may not always be completely fair or accurate. Maybe sometimes the flash deserves a high rating because it hits home, or because the artist really gave his best to entertain your eyes, or because it had personal nostalgic value for you. Don't always rate a flash what you think it deserves according to the "Newgrounds flash rating sytem." It's okay to every now and then rate a submission according to how you enjoyed it.

Glad you have such a strong opinion about this, but next time just PM insanimation rather than using a review for it.

COGS OF WAR 2

"Just Awesome"

submission: COGS OF WAR 2
date: November 20, 2008

You really have to beat Gears of War 2 before watching this to get the most of out it. lol. My only complaint is the extra-fruity doll-face Baird. He's totally my favorite dude, why you gotta do me like that? Keep up the good work, Johnny.
